Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Friday, October 19, 2012, 4:16 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got alternative pumpkin beverages, some Turkey Day help from Greensgrow, and a special tasting menu at Bistrot la Minette.

With pumpkin beers and pumpkin spice espresso drinks grabbing so much press, it's always nice to see pumpkin pop up somewhere a bit less expected. Like, say, in a margarita! Pumpkin margaritas (above) are one of Cantina Los Caballitos' (1651 East Passyunk Ave.) signature fall drinks, and they're now available through Thanksgiving. Cantina dresses up their marg with pumpkin purée, made in house and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, and a spicy cinnamon rim. You can also get the pumpkin margarita at Dos Segundos (931 N. 2nd St.), with one slight variation: a non-spicy cinnamon rim. We can live with that.

Adding to the growing list of pre-orders going on for portions of your Thanksgiving meal is Greensgrow Farms (2501 E. Cumberland St.). They’ve got their order forms available now, and they ask that you get your requests in by Nov. 12. You can pick up a local, cage-free, all-natural turkey and/or choose from a selection of soups and sides, pies and ice creams. Pick-ups are on Nov. 20 and 21.

Chef Peter Woolsey at Bistrot la Minette (623 S. 6th St.) has a special tasting menu lined up for next week showcasing tastes of the Jura region of France, in honor of his wife, who was born there. The area borders Switzerland, and you can see evidence of the proximity in the menu below. The prix fixe is available Wed, Oct. 24 and Thu., Oct. 25, and costs $35 for 4 courses. (Optional wine pairings, also pulled from Jura, bump the price up to $50.)

Tartelette au Fromage Cheese fondue tart

Saucisse de Morteau Grilleé Grilled morteau “crique”, morbier sauce, chanterelles

Poulet au Vin Jaune et aux Morilles Chicken cooked in cream, morels, vin jaune
