Afternoon Snacks

Free stuff at Chima, gluten-free "noodles" five ways at Matyson, and some seriously high-quality turkeys at Fair Food Farmstand: all on today's Afternoon Snacks

Look alive, cheapskates: Center City churrascaria Chima (1901 JFK Blvd.) is launching a new 555 happy hour (i.e., everything’s $5 starting at 5 p.m., 5 days a week) and they’re giving away free food and bev by way of celebration. If you drop by tomorrow, Oct. 23, between 5 and 7 p.m., you’ll get a free caipirinha and all the free app samples you care to eat. The happy hour menu’s full of classic tastes like beef carpaccio on toast points, caprese skewers, and bites of cantaloupe with prosciutto di Parma.

In case you were somehow unaware of chef Ben Puchowitz global noodle fixation, this week’s tasting menu at Matyson (37 S. 19th St.) will clue you in. What’s more, all of these noodles are gluten-free. Oysters should pair seamlessly with salsify tagliatelle (they call it oyster plant for a reason, after all), while the sev you may know from Indian chaat takes on some completely different flavors. As usual, the menu is $45 per person, and you’ll want to BYOB.

Beef Carpaccio

Parmesan "noodles", oregano, crispy burdock

Chickpea Sev

Lamb neck, olives, tomato, dates, smoked yogurt

Salsify Tagliatelle

Oyster, creme fraiche, bottarga, lemon

Shrimp Noodles

Pork belly, egg, sesame chile broth

Carrot Cake Cannelloni

Cream cheese, walnut, cinnamon ice cream

Finally, did you know that you can pick up your Thanksgiving turkey at Fair Food Farmstand (Reading Terminal Market)? That is, if you haven’t already pre-ordered one from Greensgrow or a smoked bird from Percy St. They’ve got organic birds from Lancaster, heritage Bourbon Reds from Princeton, and a couple of choices, including heirloom Bronze birds, from Tamaqua, PA. You can order them online and pick up either on Tue., Nov. 20 or Wed., Nov. 21, depending on what you pick out.
