Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 4:30 PM

Today's Afternoon Snacks has cute cupcakes, cheap sandwiches, free cake, and a cram session for coffee geeks.

The best part of Halloween is, of course, how flat-out adorable everything becomes. Case in point: the special Halloween cupcakes (above) from Sweet Freedom (1424 South St.)—and of course, like everything at the bakery, they’re suitable for people eating around any number of food allergies or restrictions. Varieties pictured are Boston Scream, Jack-o-Lantern Pumpkin, Candy Corn Vanilla, Boo-stess, Sa-monsta (that's a Samoa cupcake - a vanilla cupcake with chocolate and caramel filling, with vanilla frosting and green-tinged toasted coconut) and Eyeball Chocolate; they’ll be available at the bakery through the 31st.

Make a note on your calendar for Sat., Nov. 3: that’s National Sandwich Day, and it’s also the 50th anniversary of Shank’s Original (901 S. Columbus Blvd). What that means for you is sandwiches will go for a paltry $2.50, and you'll even snag some free birthday cake.

If you won’t be making the trip to AC for the NERBC—or if you do go and feel some pangs of envy watching the contestants create latte art—you might want to RSVP for this class at Reading Terminal Market on Thu., Nov. 15 from noon to 2 p.m. Baristas from Old City Coffee will show off their skills and answer any question you can dream up, as long as it’s on the topic of coffee.
