Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 4:11 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks: Day of the Dead tequila tasting, free booze on South St., boozy jack-o'-lanterns, and where to score one Halloween must-have.

While Halloween might be just about to wrap up, there’s still plenty of Day of the Dead fun to look forward to. At Distrito (3945 Chestnut St.), the annual Día de los Muertos celebration is tequila-fueled, as always. This Fri., Nov. 2, they’re offering happy hour specials all night long, from 5 p.m. to close. Drink specials include $3 cans of Corona and $7 tequila flights highlighting Cuervo 1800. You can also snag a deal on chicken or steak alambres, gambas a la Mexicana (featuring—what else?—tequila!), or chicken mole poblano tamales. (If you find yourself craving those tamales afterward, you’re in luck: the recipe can be found in Jose Garces’ latest cookbook.)

Of course, Halloween’s not over yet, and hopefully you’re getting more use out of your costume tonight. Think you’re too old for trick-or-treating? Well, you probably are, unless you’re dropping in somewhere like Supper. (926 South St.) They’re giving away a free beer or glass of wine to anyone who stops by in costume during happy hour tonight, from 5 to 7 p.m. Maybe don’t toss that treat in your pillowcase with all the others, though—you’ll make a mess.

Might be a bit late for pumpkin-carving inspiration, but we enjoyed looking at all of these Victory-branded jack-o’-lanterns nonetheless.

Finally, if you ask us, caramel apples are key to making it really feel like Halloween. Unfortunately, you're unlikely to pick one up while trick-or-treating anymore, and they're one of those things you're never going to make yourself if you want just one. Take heart: Ms. Goody Cupcake (1838 East Passyunk Ave.) has them today, and they're adorable, and the shop is open until 7 p.m.
