Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Friday, October 5, 2012, 3:52 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, learn to make bagels, celebrate even more pumpkin ales, and enjoy dinner and a concert under the stars in Ambler.

To their detractors, bagels are often derided as being “just round bread”—and too often, when you try to make your own at home, that’s actually a pretty apt description of the result. Fortunately, Spread Bagelry (262 S. 20th St.) has proven their mettle in bagel arts, and now they’re willing to pass along their secrets to you, the aspiring home bagel-baker. Register for their class on Tuesday, Oct. 30th at 7 p.m. and you’ll get a hands-on lesson in crafting the Montreal-style bagels that have made a name for Spread. The $24 course—which you can register for right here—is part of the “What is Your Food Worth?” series presented by a coalition of historical and cultural organizations that examines its eponymous query from “cultural, historical, financial, environmental, and religious” angles.

City Tap Room is hardly the only place going all out when it comes to rolling out pumpkin brews for the season. Iron Hill (various locations) is going squash-crazy, too, for the entire month of October. Their Great Imperial Pumpkin Ale, a full-bodied ale that pairs the gourd with pumpkin pie spices and molasses, is now available at all of their locations. But there are also plenty of special parties and limited tappings to look out for that vary by location. Iron Hill North Wales (1460 Bethlehem Pk.) kicks off their own Pumpkin Month with tonight’s edition of Firkin Fridays, where they’ll be serving up rare tastes of their Reserve Pumpkin Ale. (Check out their website for the full schedule; things really kick into gear as we get closer to Halloween.)

And while we’re on the subject of the suburbs, Trax Café (27 W. Butler Pk., Ambler)—the American BYOB in the old Ambler train station that’s well-loved by locals—has one final outdoor event planned to enjoy the patio while they still can. Aptly named Rock ‘n Roll on the Patio, the event on Friday, Oct. 12th, is, well, just what it sounds like. They’ll have local band Out of Order playing, and a special menu from the grill starting at 9:30 p.m. (From 4:30 to 10 that day, their regular menu will also be available.) There’s no cover charge for the music, and the restaurant welcomes guests to bring lawn chairs or blankets to come enjoy the show—but reservations are recommended for dinner.
