Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, November 29, 2012, 4:29 PM

More great local gift ideas (feel free to give them to yourself!) and an NYT holiday recipe search, on today's Afternoon Snacks.

We've run a number of local edible gift ideas in City Paper of late, but honestly, there are more good choices than there are column inches. So to throw another suggestion into the mix, how about a local chocolate sampler from the PA General Store (Reading Terminal Market)? There are two mixes available at $30 for four top-quality bars—one all-dark, one a mix of of dark and milk options. Represented are longtime area favorites Asher's and Lore's, newer stars John and Kira's and Éclat, and Philly's first bean-to-bar producer, LoveBar.

Meanwhile, these are being marketed as holiday gifts, but we're thinking it might just make a nice gift to our own freezers: Chester Co.'s Wyebrook Farms is wrapping up "Farmer's Gift Baskets" of locally and humanely raised meats for the holiday season. $75 nets you a seven-pound variety of items like grassfed steaks, porkchops, pastrami, bacon, and even some eggs for good measure. You can find more details via their site, email info@wyebrookfarm.com if you're interested, and then pick up your goods at the farm itself or at Green Aisle or Cook on Tuesdays throughout December. If you're unsure of what will be of most use to a friend who likes to cook—what tools do they already have, what cookbooks will they really want to use?—you can't ever go wrong with high-quality produce that can be stashed in the freezer for later use.

Finally, we are totally going to do this: the NYT Dining section is looking for reader-submitted holiday dessert recipes. You can submit your through Thu., Dec. 6, and they'll test the submissions and choose a few to print in the paper and online the week before Christmas.
