Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 3:02 PM

Local pros wow us with gingerbread masterpieces, Saveur asks why pie and ice cream have to be, like, two different things, and Hudson Valley comes to East P'yunk: all on today's Afternoon Snacks!

Although many of the stores we frequent haven't even run out of discounted Halloween candy yet, we feel like it's really never too early to enjoy elaborately decorated gingerbread houses. Luckily for us, we only have to wait one more week for the unveiling of this year's Fairmount Park gingerbread holiday house display. Starting on Tue., Nov. 13, edible replicas of Fairmount landmarks crafted by local pastry wizards will be on display at the Shops at Liberty Place through Dec. 9. The exhibit ties in with the annual holiday tours of Fairmount's historic homes; full details can be found here.

What's a pie-ice cream pie? Something for which we have Saveur to thank, apparently. PIE BECOMES ICE CREAM AND THEN THAT VERY SAME ICE CREAM BECOMES PIE.

Admittedly, we have a huge soft spot in our hearts for the Hudson Valley, which may contribute to how appealing tonight's $45 tasting menu at Will (1911 E. Passyunk Ave.) looks to us. But it probably also has something to do with how appealing Will's tasting menus always look. Either way, check out the Hudson Valley Land and Sea menu, for which there are still some tables available:

Tuscan Kale Vichyssoise
razor clam, vermouth

Duet of Scallop & Wild Boar Terrines
green apple, pickled eggplant, tomato marmalade

Hudson Valley Farms Dourade
fine herbs, yuzu sauce, sauce salpicon

Whole Roasted Striped Sheep’s Head
cucumber, wild rice, pastice

Poached Anjou Pear
pistachio genoise, maple, cider
