Afternoon Snacks

On Today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got boozy, sagey cupcakes, holiday goodies from Belle Cakery, and a global Christmas recipe round-up.

OK, we're intrigued: starting today and "for a limited time," Whole Foods Callowhill (2001 Pennsylvania Ave.) has these SAGE-pomegranate cupcakes (above). That is, actual sage-sage, but also AITA's SAGE liquor. You can check out the play-by-play here: vanilla cake gets a SAGE-pom syrup soak, a swirl of SAGE buttercream, a dollop of pomegranate foam, and a candied sage leaf by way of decor.

And while we're on the topic of holiday-appropriate treats, we need to talk about Belle Cakery's (1437 E. Passyunk Ave.) holiday menu. You can order any of these goodies for any of your holiday parties with 72 hours notice (if you're stuck with less time, call them up anyway and see what they can do in your timeframe). The chestnut dacquoise with marrons glacés is about as fancy-Christmassy as is it gets, but we also love the sound of a chocolate-butterscotch Bûche de Noël. And Belle makes an awesome cookie platter, too. While we're at it, throw in a Meyer lemon tart and all the gingerbread brioche, please and thank you!

For the DIY set, Saveur's got Christmas recipes from all over the globe. We can't get enough chruÅ›ciki around Christmas, and a Québécoise tourtière is also a perennial favorite. Recipes for pernil asado and pasteles make us wish we had a Puerto Rican holiday party to attend. Lightly-sweet Swedish saffron buns and these chocolate-almond spice cookies from Basel are unfamiliar, but we're seriously considering adding both to our prep list. And, come on, cheese and bread soup? That's a no-brainer. We think it'll be a perfect no-fuss meal in the harried days leading up to Christmas.
