Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 3:46 PM

The best free apples ever, a local cheese and mushroom feast, a Maple Syrup Heist update, and free beers for toys this weekend, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!

Tonight marks another installment of free in-store performances at Art in the Age (116 N. 3rd St.)—this time featuring the Silver Ages with John Wesley Harding—and as usual, there will be complimentary cocktails to go around. But tonight there is another free thing that is even better than those first couple of free things: SNAP caramel apples. No, really! Get there at the 6 p.m. start for a good standing spot or first dibs on a drink or whatever, but mostly to ensure that you get to grub down on some apples.

Tomorrow night, Wed., Dec. 19, Southwark (701 S. 4th St.) is putting on a special dinner with Birchrun Hill Farms, Oley Valley mushrooms, and our beloved bûche de Noël. The four-courser is $45, and the optional beverage pairing will only set you back an additional $10 (read: super-solid deal). Birchrun Hill will also be selling cheese if you would like to take some home with you (spoiler alert: you would).

First
Roasted Mushroom, Birchrun Blue Soup

Second
Veal Tartare, Marinated Mushrooms

Third
Chicken Cordon Bleu, Grilled Mushrooms

Fourth
Yule Log!

So, we're sure you remember our tale of grand theft maple syrup back in August. Hmm, no? OK, fine, here's a refresher. Well, today's Globe and Mail brings news that Canadian law enforcement has caught and charged three men with the theft, but they're still on the lookout for five more suspects. This sounds like a much larger operation than we originally pictured!

This Saturday, Dec. 22 at Bottle Bar East (1308 Frankford Ave.), they’re giving away a free beer for every new toy donated for Toys for Tots. Of course you’re giving to make a kid’s Christmas special, not because there’s something in it for you—but free beer doesn’t hurt.
