Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Monday, December 3, 2012, 4:31 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got panforte for Christmas, a half-price deal on gift cards, good news for fans of Taco Tuesdays or Sunday tapas tastings on 13th St., and an industry night coming up in Old City.

MT head Caroline Russock visited stadler-Kahn (1724 Sansom St.) in City Paper’s gift guide with plenty of great ideas for the holidays, and now the shop is adding one more of the edible variety into the mix. Owner Alex Stadler is now selling Panforte Azzardo (shown above), handmade in Vermont by his brother Daniel. It comes beautifully wrapped for $20 for an 8-ounce cake—and a little goes a long way with this intensely flavored holiday treat full of spices and citrus zest. You can place a special order for the cake through Dec. 19 for delivery in time for Christmas Eve.

Throughout the holidays, there are plenty of times when you find yourself looking for a good small gift—something that might make a nice tip or that can be slipped into a card for someone you wouldn’t otherwise shop for. Small-denomination gift cards are the obvious go-to, and while one for Wawa won’t likely go unused, here’s a great deal to consider: Shank’s Original (901 S. Columbus Blvd.) is selling $10 gift cards at half-price right up until Christmas Eve. That means you can buy a handful of the cards if you like at just $5 a pop, and just like that, you’ve bought a bunch of people lunch. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

Quick bit of news: The popular Taco Tuesdays at Lolita (106 S. 13th St.) and Sunday tapas tastings at Jamonera (105 S. 13th St.) have officially been extended throughout December and January.

Craft and Claw (126 Chestnut St.) has an Industry Appreciation night coming up next Tue., Dec. 11—if you work in the industry you’re welcome, you just need to RSVP to get on the list (contact Maura Quinn at 267-994-0363 or Maura_quinn@charmer_sunbelt.com). It’s being co-hosted by Tito’s vodka, so there will be plenty of free cocktails to go with their bar snacks and seafood, and the party runs from 8 to 11 p.m.

The unseasonably warm weather is a perfect excuse to dine al fresco at Talula's Garden (210 Washington Square West) this evening. Aimee Olexy and chef Sean McPaul are hosting a fundraiser for Fair Food Philly with a $100 a head dinner with all proceeds going to help the local, sustainable, edible cause.
