Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 4:32 PM

Today's Afternoon Snacks is all about December's new crop of seasonal specials, from chili to eggnog to peppermint to... Rudolph?

First up, a look at the December specials at Jake’s Sandwich Board (122 S. 12th St.) moving in to take the place of November’s Turducken sandwich and pumpkin shake. In lieu of a sandwich, they’ve got a warming pork cheek chili with cilantro-lime sour cream (shown above)—and a decidedly chillier peppermint shake to go with.

Meanwhile, the Hot Diggity (630 South St.) is going a little Christmas-crazy with their Reindeer Dog, which has rum roasted pears, bacon-rosemary kraut, red pepper chutney, beets, and shaved almonds. And yes, that’s all atop a dog made of actual reindeer meat—it’s not just a cutesy name.

Another thing that’s bound to happen in December is an influx of eggnog flavored items. We can’t say we’re quite as excited about this one as we are about gingerbread and peppermint, but we will grant this: eggnog flavored baked goods are vastly preferable to actual eggnog.  Of course, we know plenty of people can’t get enough eggnog anything. So how about eggnog cupcakes? Why not, right? You can get these pretty whiskey-eggnog ones at Ms. Goody Cupcake (1838 E. Passyunk Ave.). And while vegans and dairy-intolerant folks don’t often get to indulge in real nog, Sweet Freedom (1424 South St.) has managed to get the flavor into an allergen-free cupcake (happily, much of the magic of nog is in the nutmeg).

Of course, if you’re a fellow nog skeptic, December brings plenty of other signature flavors. The Sweet Box Truck is highlighting varieties like snickerdoodle and red velvet candy cane, with upcoming features driving us crazy including white chocolate-cranberry and gingerbread. As a bonus, their frequent Love Park location will put you right smack dab in the middle of the Christmas Village—with the all the extra treats that implies.
