Afternoon Snacks

Limited edition beer popcorn, a sugary First Friday pick, and a little light reading for the craft beer-crazed, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!

Sign us up: Metropolitan Bakery has caramel corn made with Victory Baltic Thunder now. Porter popcorn! And it’s saddled with those two magical words that basically require you to eat a ton right now—limited edition. It’s $9.95 per tub (you know popcorn is an ideal food because it comes by the tub) and you can get your hands on some at any Metro store, at Victory’s Downingtown brewpub, or right here.

It’s almost First Friday and we know what we’ll be doing: watching one of the Berley brothers making Shane’s famous barley candy clear toys. Ryan Berley will be demoing the process—and giving out samples—at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (315 Chestnut St.) from 5 to 8 p.m., with pourings scheduled around 5:30 and 6:45 for those that don’t want to stick around for the whole thing. (Why anyone would want to cater to those people, we sure as hell don’t know.)

Allagash rep Suzy Woods shared this trade-rag article yesterday that’s definitely worth a read for anyone in our craft-happy town. Basically, it’s all about how the craft beer craze has reached a point where it’s causing problems for the very brewers it celebrates. With so many bars and restaurants boasting rotating taps to keep customers happy and constantly coming back for something new, individual breweries may have lots of chances to get a showing, but fewer opportunities to gain a consistent foothold anywhere. …oops?
