Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Monday, February 11, 2013, 3:53 PM

Mardi Gras plans, space food, and art going up at Cheu, all on today's Afternoon Snacks!

What are you doing tomorrow? Work? School? But you can get out of that, right? Because it's Mardi Gras, and the obvious way to spend it is with a day-long visit to Khyber Pass Pub (56 S. 2nd St.). To celebrate, they're throwing themselves right into happy hour when they open at 11 a.m., then doing a second happy hour from 4-6 p.m. All day, Louisiana-favorite Abitas will go for just $4, and of course there'll be no shortage of gumbo, étouffée, and beignets to fuel you through to last call.

We're sorry we didn't see this earlier, because it's seriously fantastic: this designboom post shows off 50 years of space food. (While the packaging is the main draw, be sure to scroll all the way through for the parting shot of astronauts feasting on the international space station.)

Anxious for Cheu Noodle Bar to get going? Well, the wait continues, but chef Ben Puchowitz has been teasing some of the progress on Instagram—today he posted a bunch of pictures of their custom wall art, which we're crazy about.
