Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, February 6, 2013, 3:53 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we've got macarons and other gorgeous Valentine's Day goodies, dessert picks from Meal Ticket's founding father, and a great vertical tasting event tomorrow at Devil's Den!

Metropolitan Bakery is showing off their Valentine's Day treats, and—no surprise here—they look pretty delicious. Above are ridiculously perfect-looking macarons in "red hot" cinnamon and white chocolate coffee flavors (thanks, don't mind if we do have a dozen or two!). Drop in for a visit and you'll also find tons of other perfect V-Day sweets, including strawberry and raspberry coeur a la crème, brownie bites topped with whipped ganache, chocolate cherry bread, raspberry linzer cookies, and pâtes de fruits.

Speaking of sweets, did you see today's Philly.com piece on great desserts in unlikely places from Drew Lazor? Kicking off his list is Vedge (1221 Locust St.), where chef Kate Jacoby somehow takes desserts that sounds like they'd be impossible to make vegan, and somehow makes them even better than most of their non-vegan counterparts. (We're guessing black magic, but that's just us.) Click through to see the rest of his picks!

And in beer tasting news, drop by Devil's Den (11th and Ellsworth Sts.) tomorrow (Thu., Feb. 7) starting at 7 p.m. for a vertical tasting event featuring Weyerbacher Brewing. They'll be serving Blithering Idiot barleywine and its barrel-aged sibling, Insanity, in three different vintages (2011, 2012, and 2013). Just try to remember this is about 11% ABV, so be careful out there.
