Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Monday, March 11, 2013, 4:22 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got a pairing dinner with the great Avery Brewing Co., a tap takeover from a brewery we haven't seen in ages, and maybe some free cake!

There’s still time to get in on the next beer pairing dinner at JG Domestic (2929 Arch St.). It’s scheduled for this Thu., Mar. 14, and this time they’re featuring beers from Colorado’s Avery Brewing Co. $65 gets you four courses paired with some fairly hefty brews—not to mention the priceless delight of one of the best dish names we’ve seen in a while: Chili con Cockles!

Amuse
Smoked Cape May Salts
fine herb, moonshine mignonette, hackleback caviar
Odio Equum barrel-aged sour

First
Cajun Boudin
whole grain mustard barbecue sauce
Chili con Cockles
Rancho Gordo beans, clams
Hog Heaven barleywine

Second
Plank-grilled Strip Steak
cornbread, grilled red onion relish
Sweet Potato Casserole
bourbon-glazed cippolini onions, sage marshmallow
The Maharaja Imperial IPA

Dessert
Butterscotch pudding
saffron shortbread, poached fig and prune
The Reverend quadruple ale

In rarely-seen beer news, tonight will see a tap takeover by Two Brothers Brewing at Prohibition Taproom (501 N. 13th St.). Apparently, the Illinois brewer has been out of the Philly market for three years, so they’ll be bringing some rare finds in the name of celebration. The takeover starts at 5 p.m. this evening, and will feature Bitter End, Cane and Ebel, Domaine Dupage, Outlaw, Long Haul, Ebelweiss, and Prairie Path.

Pamcakes (404 S. 20th St.) is doing a contest on Facebook that could net you a dozen free cupcakes (and we would consider it a major failing on our part if we didn’t tell you about the potential for free cake). Head over to their FB page, Like them, and enter the best flavor idea you’ve got. Best flavor gets the cakes.
