Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, March 14, 2013, 3:56 PM

Today's edition of Afternoon Snacks celebrates Greek Independence Day, veganism, and good old-fashioned bartering.

At the risk of insulting a bunch of made-up food holidays (btdubs, we forgive you for not sending us a Happy Beef Carpaccio Day! Hallmark greeting, though it did sting a bit at the time), we really do love a good, actual holiday with actual food traditions attached to it. And if we can all declare ourselves Irish on March 17th, then we see no reason why we can't all be Greek for a day on March 25th. That's Greek Independence Day and hey, we happen to love Greece's independent nature!

You know what else we love? Gigantic homestyle feasts that cost $25. Clearly, Opa (1311 Sansom Street) really gets us. For one day and one day only, $25 gets you a serious dinner—and maybe leaves enough budgetary wiggle room for you to tack on an optional $25 pairing option (wine or Greek digestifs; your call).

Home-made Country Bread with tzatziki, melitzanosalata and hummus

Olives and Feta Cheese

Toursi (pickled vegetables)

Mom’s Filo Pies: tyropita (cheese pie) and spanakopita (spinach pie)

Tiganites Piperies (pan-fried long peppers)

Seafood Board: cast-iron pot of mussels, fried kalamari with harissa aioli, grilled sardines with tomato-garlic stew

choice of:
Bakaliaros me Skorthalia (salt cod and garlic sauce)
-or-
Arni Kokinisto (tomato-based stew over orzo)

Loukoumades: beignets with honey-cinnamon drizzle, walnuts, merenda and spiced banana

Baklava: layered phyllo and walnuts with honey and fig ice cream

Of course, before we can get to Greek Independence Day, we've got to get through that other little holiday coming up this weekend. But if you'd rather skip it, Weaver's Way (559 Carpenter Lane) is going in the complete opposite direction this Sun., Mar. 17 by hosting Vegan Fest. Get your detox on and eat a bunch of free vegan things—there will even be free vegan snacks for your dog. (If Mt. Airy's not in the cards for you on Sunday, the Chestnut Hill store is also doing free sampling and specials that day; check their site for details. Vegan taco details, no less!)

And while we'd like to keep this info to ourselves to ensure that we'll be able to snag a spot, we're just no good at keeping secrets: Registration is coming up for the next Philly Food Swap, which is going to be at Reading Terminal Market. There are 60 spots and they'll open up the book on Mon., Mar. 18, so grab your phone and set up that reminder now. (You can bring yourself up to speed here and here.)
