Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, March 19, 2013, 3:34 PM

Today's Snacks has ginger beer with a kick to kick off spring, a zebra menu (no, not like that), and the easiest and most useful DIY project we've seen in a while.

As fantastic as ginger beer is, we assume we're not alone in occasionally wishing it were actually, you know, beer. Enter Crabbie's, a Scottish import that is refreshing and spicy and gingery, but is also alcoholic. At 4.8% ABV and meant to be served on the rocks, it's a nice change of pace from the hefty winter beers we've been nursing. So it makes sense that Crabbie's is the guest of honor tomorrow night at Growlers (736 S. 8th St.) to celebrate the first day of spring. They'll be letting the classic go for just $3 (over ice, with a twist), and a few ginger beer cocktails will also be available for $5 (a shot of rum makes it a Dark and Crabbie's).

Of course there will also be some gingery specials on the board to go with. Look out for pulled pork sliders with Crabbie's-infused BBQ sauce (seen above), ginger jerk chicken satay skewers, and brussels sprouts with bacon, cheddar, ginger and apple cider vinegar. The party starts at 5 tomorrow, Wed., Mar. 20.

Meanwhile, maybe it's just that all that horse meat talk go into our heads, but today when we came across a zebra-print menu titled "Taming of the Stripes," we got a little nervous. Actual story: the Sofitel has a new zebra-themed art installation in its lobby, and their Liberté Lounge (120 S. 17th St.) is celebrating with a menu that is African-inspired and that does not include any zebra meat. Here's the full menu, which is available for lunch and dinner, now through Mar. 31:

Senegalese L'Assiette des Assiette Wraps
Halibut with Black- Eyed Peas, Heart of Palms & Micro Greens in Rice Paper
Wraps

Ghana Soup Shooters
Chicken Vegetable Soup Lightly Thickened with White Pea Beans

Uganda veal with Bananas and Ginger
Veal with Tomatoes, Bananas & Ginger in Tartlet Shells

Cameroon Beef Curry en Brochette
Curry Beef Tenderloin with Pineapple and Coconut

Kenya M'Baazi
Coconut Beans in Lettuce Envelops

Nigerian Pancakes with Smoked Shrimp
White Bean Pancakes Topped with Marinated Smoked Shrimp

Finally, please immediately check out this post from Phickle, which covers what is probably the easiest project you will ever find that will also give you a huge ego boost and make you feel like a kick-ass, self-sufficient, pragmatic adult whether you are one or not. (OK, spoiler: it's making your own vinegar.)
