Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, March 6, 2013, 4:59 PM

On today's edition of Afternoon Snacks, an FU Sandy update, cheese and tea pairings, and cheesy kitchen tips.

Remember when we told you about Flying Fish's FU Sandy? We're sure many of you got to try it (at least we hope you did!), and now we've got an update. With 100% of the proceeds earmarked for Sandy relief, the limited release brought in $45,000. After nominations and voting took place among Flying Fish fans over Facebook and Twitter, the beneficiaries have been decided. The money will be split between three Jersey shore chapters of Habitat for Humanity, the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund, and Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ.

Soak up some smarts at the Random Tea Room & Curiosity Shop (714 N. 4th St.) on Wed., Mar. 27, when they team up with Cheese Nerd Seth Kalkstein (of Downtown Cheese, Birchrun Hills, Tria, and basically anywhere you find cheese) for a cheese-and-tea tasting. Class starts at 6 p.m. and you can buy tickets ($35) right here. I don't mind telling you, this sounds like a much classier pairing than my morning habit of downing a cup of coffee with a big hunk of whatever cheese I pull out first when I reach blindly into the fridge. You tea drinkers are fancy.

And speaking of cheese: here are some cheese tips from America's Test Kitchen. Is anyone else as fascinated by these tips they run as I am? I almost never really want to use any of them—only once in a blue moon do they address a problem I've ever actually had—but I like to picture the people who come up with them having had it UP TO HERE with cheese that doesn't perfectly fit their bread, or gouda that is apparently impossible to grate (?), or whatever. Oh, and the illustrations are charming. And you never know—you might just find something in there that will change your whole cooking life.
