Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, March 7, 2013, 4:03 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got more twists on a Philly icon, a jab at Michelin inspectors, and dumplings we plan to make by the ton.

"What's that I'm looking at?" you may be thinking right about now. "Probably just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill pot pie." Pfft, WRONG. It's actually a cheesesteak pot pie from Noir (1909 E. Passyunk Ave.)—in other words, the latest entry into the constant tug-of-war between those Philadelphians who insist that people stop treating the cheesesteak as our city's primary signifier, and those who say, "Cheesesteak everything!" Roll it into a soup dumpling! Layer it onto a salad! Chuck it in a pie!

We're not really taking sides on that issue*, since we can't really see what's to complain about a pie full of ribeye, onions, mushrooms, and cheese (a fence-sitting 3-cheese blend, in case you wondered: American, provolone, and cheddar). The pie costs $12 and is only available at dinner, Tue. through Sun.

(* To be clear, though, we here at MT do take sandwich sides: we're firmly on the side of any sandwich that tastes good.)

Eater National rounds up tweets displaying Michelin's nasty streak; calls them "worse than Yelpers." Ouch.

On the weekend to-do list: these Sichuan Pork Wontons via Saveur. We can (and have—more often than we'd like to admit) down multiple orders of these spicy dumplings, so our wallets will definitely appreciate a homemade version.
