Afternoon Snacks

Hot dogs gone wild, BBQ bologna, a product recall alert, and must-listen podcasts, on today's Afternoon Snacks!

Here at Meal Ticket, tracking monthly specials and limited releases is kind of like a religion. And even in the realm of limited-run specials, where the name of the game is often how over-the-top you can go, something sometimes comes along that sort of baffles us. Like this month's General Tso Dog at the Hot Diggity (630 South St.)—"crispy hot dog nuggets"? "Pork fried puffed rice"? And are those little bites of  raw broccoli? (Also making an appearance: hot Chinese mustard, sesame broccoli slaw, and scallions.) We have to admit, if this were coming from a place we didn't implicitly trust as we do the HD, we might take a pass. But as it is, we're champing at the bit to get our paws on one. (However: how are you not going to go full-frontal with your crispy hot dog nuggets in the photo, HD? Come on.)

Speaking of specials, the ability to preview specials boards is one of the main things that keep us on the internets, and today's offerings from Blue Belly (600 Catharine St.) are looking especially good. (One of our favorite phrases: "with tots.")

And in gross news: LA Weekly talks tuna recall. Check your pantries, people.

Required listening: the latest Food is the New Rock has Francis Lam, which is reason enough to carve out the time.
