Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, July 12, 2012, 5:08 PM

Today's Afternoon Snacks include pigging out at Amada, a saison brunch at Johnny Brenda's, food trucks to benefit Slow Food, and ice cream and massages from Dove chocolate.

Johnny Brenda's (1201 N. Frankford Ave) is hosting a Saison Brunch with more than enough beer to get you through the day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. eat your fill with traditional brunch as well as some French country specialties, and drink your fill with Saison and Farmhouse Ale styles on tap, including 2 new additions: Tired Hands “Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt” (India black coffee Saison brewed with JB's coffee beans) and McKenzie Zaza (low ABV amber Saison). Even better, from 12p.m. to 4 p.m., DJs Ashley Crockett and Sean Tully will be blasting French pop and yeye. Do you even know what that sounds like? No? Then head over on Saturday July 14, but first, check out the menu:

On Tap

Sixpoint Harbinger Saison

McKenzie Saison Vautour

Brew Works Monkey Wrench

Brew Works Space Monkey-Raspberry Saison

Sly Fox Saison Brun

Weyerbacher 17-Anniversary Spiced Saison

Broederlijke Liefde “Brotherly Love”

DuPont Belge Speciale

Dogfish Head Saison du BUFF

Brunch Specials

Lyonnaise Salad with lardons, frisse, croutons, dijonnaise and a poached egg

Ham and gruyere quiche

Duck rillettes with duck liver mousse on toast and a brandied cherry jam

Summer vegetable terrine with cucumber sauce and lavash

Merguez sausage on lentils with piperade and grilled pita

Clafoutis of fresh sweet cherries with lemon-honey sweet cream butter

Peach tart tatin with vanilla ice cream

The Dove Adults Only Ice Cream Truck is coming to Philly on Tuesday July 17, and no, it's not what you're thinking. Dove will be giving away free Dove Ice Cream bars to adults only, as well as free five-minute massages and manicures. The truck will be parked at Liberty Place Plaza at 11:30 a.m., and then stopping by the ShopRite at 9910 Frankford Ave at 5 p.m. Sounds a little girly, but what man or woman would turn down a free massage with ice cream? Not I.

Slow Food Philadelphia and Farm to City are collaborating to bring you their annual Good Food, Good Beer and the Rest is History fundraising event for a good cause with an even better concept behind it. Slow Food reminds us to honor and respect the time and labor it takes to get food to our tables in an age where for most people, food comes from the grocery store. I mean honestly, how many of you eat cereal every morning, but have never milked a cow? Exactly.

On Saturday July 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., you can enjoy beer from Earth, Bread + Brewery, Philadelphia Brewing Company, Stoudt's and Victory, as well as food from Chez Yasmine, Vernalicious, Foo Truck, Zea May's and Sweet Box foodtrucks. There will also be food demos and samplings, so get your tickets here in advance for $30, or show up at The Shambles, Head House Square, Society (2nd and Lombard) and pay $35.

On Sunday July 22, Amada's Pig-Out is back, which means Garces' team is roasting a pig. Several pigs actually, since there will be two seatings for all-you-can eat Cochinillo Asado (roasted suckling pig) where anyone can grab a seat for $55 and get the whole spread, complete with 3 tapas entrées, 2 sides (also unlimited) and dessert. Yeah, that's all well and good, but what about the wine? Add $15 to your seat and you'll get unlimited white and red sangria too. Cheers! Reserve your seat by credit card for either 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.or 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. by calling 215-625-2450.

First

Ensalada Verde - green salad with fava beans and avocado

Tortilla Espanola - Spanish potato and egg cake with saffron aioli

Choriszo à la Planxa - grilled skewers of Spanish sausage

Second

Cochinillo Asado - brined for two days in sugar and salt water and oven-roasted with olive oil and sea salt

Braised Rainbow Chard with garbanzo beans and lemon

Herb-Roasted Fingerling Potatoes
