Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Friday, July 20, 2012, 3:15 PM

Today's Afternoon Snacks we've got figgy Riesling celebrations, art and beer at the Memphis Taproom and a special treat for all Seinfeld fans.

Calling all Seinfeld fans, the Seinfeld “No Soup For You” food truck has hit the road, and Philly is stop #3. On July 30th somewhere in the city, you will be able to grab a bite of iconic Seinfeld food (no menu included here... if you are a true fan, you will know what this entails) and to participate in giveaways, all for no cost. Rumor has it Soup Nazi Larry Thomas may make an appearance some time during the tour, so look out. Stay tuned on the Seinfeld facebook page for exact times and locations coming soon.

The folks over at McCrossen's Tavern (529 N. 2th St.) are celebrating this season with Summer of Riesling, which has two new wine events on deck. Sommelier Lauren Harris, cheese guy Rocco Rainone from DiBruno Bros and chef Townsend Wentz are teaming up for a $32 wine and cheese dining event with a fig twist. Chef Wentz is dishing out a fig-inspired menu, along with German Riesling wine pairings explained and demystified by Harris, while Rainone guides diners through his selected cheeses topping off each course. This dining experience is set to go down at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday July 24, and reservations are strongly encouraged – 215-854-0923. Check out the menu:

First Course

Fig salad with fennel marmalade, arugula and vin cotto

paired with

Reuscher-Haart “Piesporter” 2010 Mosel, Germany

(crisp, clean easy drinking, supple fruit, balanced acidity)

Second Course

White gazpacho with figs, candied almonds and grapes

paired with

Fritz Hasselback's “FRITZ'S” 2008 Reinhessen, Germany

(green fruit, tangerine and white peach, mineral backbone)

Third Course

Sautéed foie fras with pickled figs and brioche soldiers

paired with

Hexamer “Quarzit” 2010 Nahe, Germany

(pretty stone fruit, white flowers, a little petrol, spritzy acidity)

Fourth Course

Grilled pork with figs and fourme d'Ambert and mint pesto

paired with

Karl Erbes “Urziger Wurzgarten” Spatlese 2011 Mosel, Germany

(gorgeous, complex peachy fruit, orange blossom, honeysuckle, petrol with acidity, lightly sweet)

Summer of Riesling continues on August 7 at 7 p.m. with the Old World vs. New World Smackdown. For $30, you judge 10 Rieslings in 5 categories and ultimately decide which era will be crowned winner. Challenge the connoisseur in you. The 5 categories are as follows:

Austere: Bracing acidity with a mineral focus

Bracing: Quenching and fun

Transcendent: Expect interesting and diverse options

Slutty: You know her when you see her

Opulent: Sweet and decadent

Grand Circus, a Philly-inspired paper model artist, has caught Memphis Taproom's eye with their paper model of Memphis Taproom and Beer Garden (2331 E. Cumberland St.). To celebrate the miniature model, they will be hosting the Beer Garden Paper Model Launch Party on Tuesday July 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with an extended happy hour 'til 7 p.m. Other Grand Circus paper models will be on exhibit, and you can even pick up their new Memphis Taproom Hot Dog Truck to take home.
