Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 5:09 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we've got tastings to suit any taste, including beer, cheese, and Japanese delicacies.

If our piece on Round Guys caught your eye, but you don’t see yourself making it out to Lansdale anytime soon, Memphis Taproom (2331 E. Cumberland St.) has an idea to keep you from trolling the city, trying their brews one at a time like some sort of dilettante. Hit the Taproom on Tuesday, August 28th Wednesday, August 29th from 6 p.m. to close, and you’ll meet co-owner/head brewer/Round Guy Scott Rudich and sample several of their finest pours in one fell swoop.  The line-up will include RG’s Berlinerweisster, Buh-Nana Hammock Saison, relative newcomer Fuzzy Muttness Stout (8% ABV, brewed with molasses and boasting “notes of coffee, chocolate, and licorice”), and the endless possibilities of “and more.”

Chef (and noted ramen enthusiast) Ben Puchowitz is serving up a “Taste of Japan” menu this week at Matyson (37 S. 19th St.). Now through Thursday, August 30th, $45 gets you five courses of Japanese fare a tad more refined than the noodles you may know Puchowitz for. Here’s what you’ve got to look forward to:

Kombu Cured Kompachi

Crispy wasabi, edamame, strawberry ponzu

Lobster Chawanmushi

Uni, sea beans, lobster mushroom

Miso Cod

Noodles, corn, yu choy, pork belly

Tea Smoked Duck Breast

Foie gras rice roll, daikon radish, soy-black garlic

Yuzu Ice Cream

If you’ve been struggling to make up your mind in front of the cheese case, or have made one too many embarrassing ordering gaffes at the bar, Tria Wash West (1137 Spruce St.) has a few seats open in this week’s Cheese 101 and Beer 101 courses. But think fast—these classes fill up quickly. If you were hoping to attend Wine 101, you’ll have to settle for the waitlist.

If you don’t get in, you can always console yourself at tonight’s installment of Drink.Think., which happily requires no reservations at all. This summer series provides quickie lessons for those looking to expand their Reisling knowledge. From 4 p.m. to close, visit the wine room (3131 Walnut St.) and enjoy two 3-oz. pours for $7, including a take-home sheet full of crib notes on the wines.
