Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 4:00 PM

We may not have passed physics, but we do know a thing or two about happy hours, wurst happenings, and crabby dinners: all on today's Afternoon Snacks.

If it's Wednesday, you're probably either pining for last weekend's highlight reel or more than ready to get started on filling the next one. Well, we can't even understand the idea behind time travel, much less help you achieve it. But we can point you to happy hour at Twenty Manning Grill (261 S. 20th St.) tonight for a mini-escape that should smooth the way through Thursday. (And hey, that's practically Friday!) Their Summer Vacation Wednesdays feature a different destination each week; tonight, you're headed to Mexico. Drop in between 5 and 7 p.m. tonight, and $20 gets you a Luchador cocktail, grilled corn on the cob, and chicken nachos. Easier than all that futzing about with the flux capacitor, anyway.

Of course, there are other good reasons to want to jump ahead a little: Jeremy Nolen, chef at Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.), told Soapbox that his new project, Wursthaus Schmitz, will be opening in just a couple of weeks. September 15th is the go-live date for the Reading Terminal Market spot, which will offer to-go items like sausages, deli salads, and German grocery items, as well as a variety of sandwiches to enjoy at the Market.

If you’re suffering from premature nostalgia for summer, put dinner at Meritage (500 S. 20th St.) on your to-do list this week. They’ve got a special tasting menu that’s all about crab, and it’s only available tonight, Wednesday August 29th, through Friday August 31st. At $39 (with an optional wine pairing for $20), the Meritage menu sounds almost as efficient a crab-delivery system as some sort of crustacean IV drip, and way more delicious. See for yourself:

Amuse Bouche
Steamed Crab Shumai, kaffir lime curry crab sauce

1st course
Smoked corn and crab chowder, corn and crab fritter

2nd course
Fried Green Tomatoes, crabby remoulade

3rd course
Roasted Grass fed beef, Soft Shell Crab, crab hollandaise,
spinach, crispy new potatoes

4th course
Valhrona Chocolate pot de creme,
cinnamon whipped cream
