Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 2:45 PM

Today’s Afternoon Snacks features dubious holidays, a little French farce to go with your dinner, and a unique lunch option to consider during the last few minutes of Jersey shore season.

Well, apparently it’s National Marshmallow Day. We’re not sure what that means either, but any excuse to eat s’mores is good enough for us. Head to Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.) where you can either toast your own, or go with the one-handed lazy man’s option with a Jack n’ s’mores shake. If you prefer your s’mores indoors, the Continental (1801 Chestnut St.) can take care of that. And if you can stomach it, we’re sure there are plenty of places serving up this stuff… but you’re on your own there.

This weekend’s courtyard movie at Bistrot la Minette (623 S. 6th St.) is Les Visiteurs, an oft-maligned French time travel farce from 1993 that still maintains a cult following. (Never heard of it? There is a slight chance you may remember the 2001 American remake, Just Visiting, which boasted Christina Applegate in a lull in her career, and Tara Reid at perhaps the apex of hers—sorry, Taradise fans.) Showtimes are tonight, Thursday August 30th at 8:30 p.m., and Friday August 31st at 9:30 p.m. Courtyard seating is limited, so you may want to call in your reservations to confirm your seating selection.

As the shore season comes to an end, so too may your chance to check out what the students of the Academy of Culinary Arts are up to at the student-run Carème’s (5100 Black Horse Pk., May’s Landing, NJ). But their lunch buffet, available Monday through Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m., is available until September 17th—so there’s still time to get in for a song. The buffet includes a selection of appetizers, mains, and dessert for just $9.95 a pop, which is less than you’ll pay once classes are back in session.
