Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Friday, August 31, 2012, 3:15 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we're just antsy for the holiday weekend to get started, already!

How often do you get to taste cheese and coffee pairings? Well, some of us seem to end up doing that most mornings, actually. But DiBruno Brothers (930 S 9th St.) has the edge on any of our home fridges when it comes to selection, so it should be fun to see what they come up with for their Saturday Morning Breakfast Club event. Drop by their Italian Market location on Saturday, September 1st between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., and enjoy a free sampling of Idaho's Doma coffee and a variety of cheeses selected to complement the brews.

Whatever your weekend plans, we hope none of them involve maple syrup, because this item from Gawker has led us to believe that we might be facing shortages that will call to mind 70s-style gas rationing. Apparently, someone has stolen $30 million dollars’ worth of syrup from a warehouse in (delightfully-named) Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, Quebec. Wikipedia notes that the town is mostly known for its cranberry bogs, and I’m not about to forego cranberry sauce come November—so let’s maybe keep a better eye on things, eh Canada?

While we’ve intimated here before that we can’t wait for fall to get here, there have been some recent signs that that may not be entirely true. Not surprisingly, those hints have come mostly in cocktail form. I mean, Saveur’s Friday Cocktail looks awfully good, right? And given that it combines cantaloupe, tequila, and lime juice with a chili salt rim, there’s no mistaking it for anything but a summer beverage. Or how about these frozen mint juleps that Khyber Pass Pub (56 S. 2nd St.) will be slinging over Labor Day weekend? We don’t even usually like frozen drinks, but we’re fully on board.
