Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, August 9, 2012, 4:00 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we've got the latest on chef Christopher Kearse's grand opening, a foie gras prix fixe, a movie with munchies and a home-brewed beer resource.

We all know and love Chef Christopher Kearse from Pumpkin (1713 South St.), a European-influenced American BYOB. Chef Kearse's latest venture, Will (1911 E. Passyunk Ave) is opening up the reservation line tomorrow in preparation for the big day, August 24th. His restaurant is decidedly French-inspired, a cuisine that he dabbled in at Pumpkin, but has really been able to experiment with in his new menu. The seasonal menus highlight ingredients that have been locally grown, harvested and foraged. Chef Kearse will serve dinner Tuesdays through Sundays, as well as brunch and a 4-course $40 prix fixe on Sundays. Call 215-271-7683 to make a reservation at this highly anticipated BYOB.

Foie gras enthusiasts will rejoice in Mica's (8609 Germantown Ave) tasting menu this week. On August 9th and 10th you can sit down to 4 courses of foie gras, and yes, this includes dessert. As always, prix fixe is $45 per person.

First Course

Foie gras terrine with donut peach, blackberry, and cinnamon beignet

Second Course

Foie gras ravioli with black truffle sauce

Third Course

Roast foie gras with sour cherry, wax potato, purple beans

Fourth Course

Foie gras crème caramel with elderflower and raspberry

Uwishunu's Moonlit Movie Screening on Saturday is coming with a couple of edible bonuses. Midnight in Paris will be showing on the big screen in Rittenhouse Square (18th and Locust) starting at 8:30 p.m., but we recommend getting there early for some pre-screening snacks. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (100 N. 20th St.) pop-up garden across the street will stay open from 6 to 9 p.m. one night only to add live jazz to the evening's festivities. Shake Shack (2000 Sansom St.) will make an appearance in the pop-up garden with free custard from 7 to 9 p.m. But you can't have a movie without popcorn, so Rouge (205 S. 18th St.) will be selling the classic cinema favorite along with hot dogs and lemonade from a sidewalk stand in front of their restaurant.

Attention Mt Airy beer-lovers: have you ever had the desire to brew your own perfectly hopped and fermented beer? Enter the Malt House Limited (7101 Emlen St.), which Scott Wikander opened in May. He's selling everything you might need to brew your own at home: beer mugs, keg equipment, malt, hops, yeast and even some assorted beer-themed souvenirs for fun.

If you're intrigued, but you have no idea where to start, Wikander, whose ancestors brewed bathtub beer during prohibition, also teaches home brewing classes and offers beer and food pairing advice. To get started on your own home brewery, stop by between 12 and 8 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekends.
