Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Monday, September 10, 2012, 4:00 PM

Today's edition of Afternoon Snacks brings a fresh new slate of classes at COOK, quickie education in Sauvignon Blanc at Tria, and new brunch options at East Passyunk's Birra.

Registration is now open for classes throughout October at COOK (253 S. 20th St.) and, as usual, there are some real treats in store. Whether you’re genuinely interested in pairing cocktails with food or just like to watch a little cutthroat competition while you drink, October 3rd’s installment of the Open Stove series, dubbed Battle Cocktail, should appeal. We’re also excited for a charcuterie intensive on Oct. 9th with Southwark’s Nick Macri. On Halloween, Val Stryjewski and Tim Kweeder of a.kitchen get in the holiday spirit with a spine-tingling class called “Blood, Bones, and Brains.” Sounds offally spooky! (Oof. We’re sorry.)

Tria has a few additions to their own educational lineup as well. This week’s Drink.Think. gives you two chances to familiarize yourself with Sauvignon Blanc. You can choose to stop by their Wash West location (1137 Spruce St.) on Fri., Sept. 14th, from 12-4 p.m., or their Wine Room (3131 Walnut St.) on Sat., Sept 15th from 4-11 p.m. Either way, Tria will drop a little knowledge on you and a pair of 3-oz. pours for just $10, with no reservations required.

In case you missed it: Birra (1700 E. Passyunk Ave.) has a new brunch service for fall. The new menu, which debuted yesterday, will be available Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We don’t know much Italian, but we suspect we should be grateful that the menu writer resisted translating Panini Lo Cardiaco into English, thereby allowing us to eat in blissful ignorance. If a sandwich of multiple meats, cheeses, chilis, and fried egg isn’t your thing, there are also massively customizable frittatas and the enticingly-named tiramisu waffle, topped with berry coulis and mascarpone.
