Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 3:16 PM

We've got a seriously decadent tasting menu from Matyson, some nerdiness to pair with your Oktoberfest shenanigans, and an exciting seasonal release from Cooperstown's Brewery Ommegang.

Chef Ben Puchowitz has a way of crafting tasting menus with the ability to quietly chastise you for not paying attention to them—like, say, when you forget to check in on Matyson (37 S. 19th St.) for one week and it turns out you almost miss out on a Butter tasting. Yeah. It’s Butter week! And you can still take advantage tonight or tomorrow. As always, it’s five courses for $45, BYO whatever you want to drink with butter and all the awesome things that it implies. Biscuits? Check (above.) Lobster? Check. Popcorn (puree)? Mmmrmph. Check out the full offering below.

House made butter, onion jam

Smoked vichyssoise, caviar, crisp burdock, fennel blossom

Popcorn puree, lobster, bearnaise

Bananas foster, cookies

Tonight, the countdown to Oktoberfest continues at Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.) with some really good specials—$10 liter drafts, $8 sausage + half-liter draft combos, etc.—but tonight also happens to feature the Hall’s monthly lecture series. And because it sort of had to go this way, tonight’s Nerd Nite is geared specifically toward beer nerds. Your $5 cover gets you access to a slate of three lectures (see the full syllabus here) with live accordion music in between.

We’re pretty intrigued by Brewery Ommegang’s new fall offering, Scythe and Sickle (5.8% ABV), a lightly-hopped amber ale the brewers describe as having “a smooth and creamy mouthfeel with light toastiness and gentle sweetness.” Hey, we could use a little toastiness right about now. If you agree, check it out at the Devil’s Den (1148 S. 11th St.) release party tonight starting at 7 p.m., where they’ll also be serving up DiBruno-curated cheese plates and other food specials made to pair with S&S and a few other Ommegang favorites.
