Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 3:10 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks, we've got farm-themed fun: a weekend-long celebration of honey bees, a reason to get your hands dirty at Greensgrow, and some beer and cheese tastings out of rural Vermont.

Let’s see if we can get through this one without any cutesy “sweet” puns: the Philadelphia Beekeepers’ Guild is putting on the 3rd Annual Philadelphia Honey Fest this weekend, and for such a niche topic it sounds pretty awesome. The location changes each day (check the website for the full rundown and any schedule changes), from Friday September 7th through Sunday September 9th, with a host of activities planned for both adults and kids. There’s everything from sampling (including honeyed mead and beer, and honey ice creams from Franklin Fountain and Little Baby’s) to introductory beekeeping classes to beeswax candle-making.

If all that hands-on craftiness, sampling from local producers, and talk of urban beekeeping gets you in the farming mood, maybe you should step up and lend Greensgrow Farms (2501 E. Cumberland St.)  a hand for this year’s Subaru Fall Festival. It’s not until October 6th, but the urban ag champs are enlisting willing volunteers now: email them at volunteer@greensgrow.org if you’d like to help.

Of course, maybe you just want to keep up the sampling and skip the hard labor. Tria Fermentation School (1601 Walnut St.) just announced a few new classes, and we’re particularly interested in the “Green Mountain Glory” night. Class is on Friday, September 21st, but with only 10 seats available, signing up early would be wise. $68 gets you an hour-and-a-half opportunity to sample beer from Hill Farmstead Brewery and cheese from Jasper Hill (both of Greensboro, VT) under the tutelage of a Jasper Hill rep. They promise plenty of tastes that you won’t otherwise find in Philly, and while it may not be as beautiful as a trip to the Green Mountains, it’s a hell of a lot more convenient.
