Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, September 6, 2012, 4:15 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, we’ve got a bevy of educational experiences to remind you of a time when the “Back to School” season still had anything to do with your life!

First up, a little something different to consider for tomorrow’s First Friday festivities: attend a free class on Herbology at the Chemical Heritage Foundation! (315 Chestnut St.) Bethany Deflores of Herbiary (locations in Reading Terminal Market and Chestnut Hill) will give a talk about the history of plant-based medicines and give demos on the distillation of tinctures and making herb-infused vinegars. If you can’t make it this month (or if you’re just more interested in distilling to damage your internal organs rather than heal them), an upcoming First Friday event at the CHF will walk you through the process of distilling liquor.

Earlier this week, we told you about this weekend’s Honey Festival. In case the jam-packed 3-day program overwhelmed you, we’ve got a suggestion to pare it down: Drop by the Wyck (6026 Germantown Ave.) on Saturday, Sept. 8th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the Philadelphia Beekeepers’ Guild will treat you to: an “Open Hive Talk” where you can see first-hand how a live hive operates, a demonstration of the process of extracting honey from the hive, and a tasting of meads from Stonekeep Meadery. Dabblers will get a solid overview in just those couple of hours, while the truly honey-obsessed can stick around for more lectures, crafts, and tastings.

Finally, Meritage (500 S. 20th St.) has a special Back to School menu running through September 15th, so you can celebrate the season without breaking out your 3-ring binders and protractors. Choose 3 courses for $29 from dishes teeming with good fall vibes via apples, pumpkin, rich offal, and a few grown-up nods to substantial childhood favorites (Kobe meatloaf and mash; Berkshire pork chop with smoked cheddar corn pudding). As a nice extra, the menu is also incredibly welcoming to the gluten-free crowd. Here’s the full menu (starred items are, or can be made, gluten-free):
