Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, February 14, 2013, 2:34 PM

Today on Afternoon Snacks, Day of Love Edition: a comprehensive restaurant guide for last-minute planners, heady chocolate dessert recipes and some pretty hilarious conversation hearts.

Foobooz has done procrastinators a favor and rounded up places to wine and dine this evening. You can narrow down your options by selecting categories like “BYOBs,” “Good Value,” and “A La Carte Available.” And they've courteously marked single-friendly establishments for those rolling solo.

In the name of wearing our hearts on our sleeves, we're going to confess our crush on the folks at Saveur. What's not to admire about these guys? They've been celebrating the week leading up to Valentine’s Day – “Chocolate Week,” that is – with daily chocolate recipes. Today, the crew bring us fifteen bake-it-yourself dessert options, all of which make fine use of that drool-worthy ingredient. Beware the seductive power of these pictures (of pies and puddings, mousses and soufflés). Graphic imagery may be inappropriate for those with a sweet tooth.

Speaking of things made of sugar, The Atlantic has word that Sweetheart candies are even funnier than we thought they were. Turns out the pastel confections have been around for almost one-hundred-and-fifty years (no wonder they taste stale), and the dudes at NECCO who churn them out have a running list of ditched sayings. Check them all out here, and take note. Precious few can resist such sentiments as, “LET’S READ,” “MY, SUCH EYES,” and “SAUCY BOY.”
