Anti-NYE programming at two Philly bars

New Year's Eve is up there with Valentine's and Mother's Day in terms of restaurant cashcowitude, so opulent tasting menus with hefty prix-fixe price tags and shmancy wine pairings is often the move. But two local hangs are pulling a casual 180 for Dec. 31.

Down in Newbold, South Philly Tap Room (1509 Mifflin St.) will rock a "Fried Chicken & Champagne" NYE starting at 5 p.m. Chef Scott Schroeder will put out all-you-can-eat crispy bird (above), with sides like collards, slaw and mac 'n' cheese, for $15 a head. To capitalize on the ring-in-the-new-year desire for bubbly, the bar will also do Champagne specials, drinks combining sparkling with mixers like Tang, fruit punch and Red Bull. There'll also be a deadly-sounding "Rainbow Flight" option, which'll get you every flute on offer.

Meanwhile, at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.), chef Jonathan Adams and friends have no multi-course menu in the works — but beginning at 6, they will shave complimentary black perigord truffles over your Churchill burger (above) while they last. When the ball drops, free whiskey toast for the house, on the house.
