August 13: 10th Annual Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge

This Saturday, August 13, the Phillies will be hosting their annual BBQ Challenge. The event, now in its 10th year, is hosted by Stephen Starr and Garry Maddox and presented by Hatfield Quality Meats and Kraft Barbecue Sauce. The event will raise money for Maddox's Youth Golf & Academics Program, which supports the education and development of inner-city kids.

The challenge will have professional restaurant contestants, but it’s also open to any barbecuer who enters the Pit Master Division. Unfortunately, attendees can sample only what the pros have to offer, but that can't stop them from admiring what the civilians create. There’s a $100 fee to participate, which also includes a Philadelphia Dept. of Health temporary special event food operation application.

Participating restaurants include Alma de Cuba, Bomb Bomb, Bull's BBQ, Butcher and Singer, Carolina Blue Smoke House & Taproom, Continental Mid-town, El Rey, El Vez, Famous Dave's, Jones, Le Cochon Noir, London Grill, McFadden's and Rosey's. They're expecting a total of 45 pit masters.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and goes until 7 at Citizens Bank Park. Guest judges will be local celebrities, chefs, food industry reps and of course Phillies alums. There will also be a raffle, a performance by the Give & Take Jugglers, pitching games and a mechanical bull, and Turkey Hill ice cream as a refreshing break from the 'cue.
