Avram Hornik talks Ortlieb's takeover

Several weeks ago, Icepack reported that there had been movement on the sale of Ortlieb's Jazzhaus in Northern Liberties (847 N. Third St.), the legendary live music and drinking venue that closed its doors last year. First word went around that a money New Yorker was looking into the narrow jazz room, then several locals with an affinity for adventurous live music. Turns out the latter was true.

Four Corners' Avram Hornik and Mark Fichera, the gentlemen behind the attempt at putting a live room at the Jumbo Theater on Girard (squashed by the neighborhood) and now the old Spaghetti Warehouse space on Spring Garden (Union Transfer, with R5 ProductionsSean Agnew and Bowery Booking), got Ortlieb's from its owner Pete Souders and could be ready to go as soon as his liquor license was transferred.

That could mean weeks, days — as soon as the license is ready, they are ready to go. "Essentially, we're leaving it as is — a neighborhood institution," says Hornik, who adds that he and Fichera will work with Souders to book live music and get a house band together ASAP.  Does that mean the continuation of Sid Simmons' jam nights? Stay tuned. "We hope to do the legend of the place justice."

As for Union Transfer, the live alterna-rock venue that was seemingly fast-tracked for autumn 2011, Hornik says that everything is coming along OK. Slowly, but surely. "It's taking time. That’s fine."
