Man’s best friend, meet man’s best french toast.

The canine community can now join the locavores of Philadelphia in celebrating Guillermo Tellez, the chef of Charlie Trotter and Striped Bass fame long known for his commitment to sustainable culinary practices. This weekend Tellez will hold his second annual Bring-Your-Own-Dog Weekend Brunch at Square 1682 in the Hotel Palomar by Kimpton (121 South 17th Street).

At the BYOD canines can enjoy a selection of $5 dishes each named after a staff member’s pup, including such specialties as Yodi’s Chow (chicken, steal cut oats, seasonal vegetables, white beans, and cheddar) and Lucky’s Moco-Loco (ground turkey, rice, fried egg, and gravy). Noe Bunnell of the Old City pet boutique BONeJOUR likes Lola's Bowl (beef tartare, raw egg, cooked rice, and carrots) the best, as dog digestion is geared toward rawer foods. "The less processed the better," she says. North Philly resident Ariel Simone, on the other hand, would be hesitant to feed her own dog raw egg, "Just because his stomach can be sensive to new foods." Yet she loves the idea of the brunch: "I always find myself wishing I could bring my dog with me when I go out to eat."

One dollar of each dog’s meal will go to Operation Ava, Philadelphia’s comprehensive downtown, no-kill rescue, adoption, and education center. On Saturday, Ava staff will be present from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help up-for-adoption dogs meet potential owners (and vice versa).

The doggie menu will be available at the outside tables all summer during brunch hours. A less canine-oriented collection of dishes ranging form Huckleberry Pain Perdu to Eggs Cochon de Lait will be available for human particpants, with mimosas and bloody marys on hand. No corkage fee necessary.
