Best of the best: Philly edition part 2

POSTED: Thursday, August 16, 2012, 12:45 PM

Yesterday we rounded up national accolades for Philadelphia area favorites including fried chicken, grilled cheese and pizza. Today we're back with outdoor drinking, brunch and sandwiches.

America's Best Outdoor Bars – Travel + Leisure

The graffiti-tagged open air bar at Sampan (124 S. 13th St.) is a bright and fun place to spend happy hour on a summer evening. The space can get tight since it only has an intimate 30 seats, but the atmosphere and the drink and app specials bring people back again and again. Even in the winter and in the rain, the clear ceiling keeps the rain and snow out so that the bar never has to close.

America's Best Brunches – Travel + Leisure

T&L was as impressed with the scope of the Garces Trading Co. (1111 Locust St.) as with the weekend brunch itself. GTC serves food and sells wine, assorted charcuterie, oils and cheeses. The brunch menu favorite is the sliced hangar steak with heirloom potato salad and a béarnaise sauce.

America's Best Wine Bars – Travel + Leisure

Garces wins again with his Basque country-inspired wine bar Tinto (114 S. 20th St.). Sip wines from northern Spain and southern France while snacking on pintxos (finger food) at the bar. The duck montadito with a glass of 2009 Descendientes de J. Palacios “Petalos” Mencia-Bierzo from Spain turned out to be the perfect pairing.

Best New Sandwich Recipes – Food & Wine

Besides serving up a great brunch every weekend, Garces Trading Co. (1111 Locust St.) also impressed with its sandwiches. We told you GTC has scope... F&W specifically hailed his harissa mascarpone chile sauce as a reinvented sandwich spread, which is served on his chickpea-fritter-and-squash sandwich.

Another Philadelphia classic is keeping things interesting with gluten-free options. Paesano's (152 W. Girard Ave and 1017 S 9th St.) offers gluten-free bread for their famous suckling pig with broccoli rabe sandwich, among others.
