Bizarre Bites: BeerCakes

Note: Frida Garza is spending the rest of her summer on the trail of Philly’s weirdest foods. First up: BeerCakes

For beer lovers, desserts just got a little more awesome.

Lexi Malmros, local cake artist, has paired beer and baked goods to create BeerCakes (517 S. 5th St., inside Cookie Confidential), cupcakes with beer worked into the batter and frosting. Malmros says she was inspired in culinary school — not in class, but at the bars around campus. Despite all their boozy offerings, “They never had dessert,” says Malmros.

Her weirdest cake? The Dogfish Head IPA cake with grapefruit Italian buttercream frosting topped with fresh grapefruit zest and sugar crystals. You can practically taste the hops, but we promise this treat comes hangover-free. Go ahead, get a dozen.
