Can-tastic! The Dirt Factory hosting a preserving workshop this Saturday

POSTED: Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:37 PM

A garden overrun with squash, tomatoes and melons is the kind of problem that only happens in August. And whether or not you'd like to admit it, these late summer goods are going to be a distant memory sooner rather than later. But maybe they don't have to be. This Saturday at 10 a.m. The Dirt Factory (4308 Market St.) is hosting a Preserving the Harvest workshop where gardeners (and farmers' market shoppers) can learn how to make their summer haul last well into the winter. Philadelphia Master Gardener Jessica S. Herwick will be on hand to teach willing novices and seasoned canners the finer points of summer produce preservation. As usual, workshops at The Dirt Factory are free, just stock up on those Mason jars and RSVP to sustainability@universitycity.org
