When a casual Sunday stroll on the street where hippies meet revealed an orange sticker at 344 South, I had a sneaking feeling it had something to do with Billy Curry and Copabanana, which has held the Third-and-South corner down for three-and-a-half decades. So I asked Curry, who gave up the info on his new upscale wine, beer and whiskey bar called Redwood that should be open by late spring or early summer.
"When the clothing store [Lady Blue] became vacant, my nephew Dan Christensen and I decided it was time to create an upscale bar with a totally different atmosphere than the Copa," says Curry. "We love the Copa and it's wildly successful, but have been left feeling oddly unsatisfied." Christensen and Curry experienced success with tablecloth restaurants — Curry with the original Cafe Nola, which had a 16-year on South, and Christensen with a New Orleans restaurant in Fort Lauderdale called Evangeline. They both have wine and beer experience and decided it was time to devote themselves to something more than margaritas. "We have been thwarted in our attempts to make the Copa menu more ambitious because those signature dishes — the burgers, the great chicken wings — keep addicted folks from ordering anything else," says Curry. "Also, I love the Disney color palette that I use in the Copa franchise, but wish to do something more sophisticated for a change."
Redwood, which will be a connected part of the Copa property, will be very different from his previous designs, with focal point bar crafted from redwood burl veneer and Prarie Arts and Crafts stained glass, which Curry says will add a "Frank Lloyd Wright architectural element." There will be two main rooms — a front bar with high tables and a back room with lower seating and a extensive wine cellar.
Curry and Christensen will also bring in a cruvinet with 24 wines by the glass (tasting and full pours) plus eight craft drafts and 100 bottles of beer he's looking to pair with Redwood’s food. The menu? "It's a very small but classic menu featuring traditional bistro favorites, some smokehouse items, small plates, cheeses, charcuterie plates, sliders and oysters, which we both love and which the original Nola featured."
