Cuba Libre owners, Matt Levin in at 10th and Walnut

It should be no surprise to those who know Cohen, Gutin and their various food enterprises such as Brûlée Catering, that Matt Levin would be their choice as 10th and Walnut's chef.

Cuba Libre owners, Matt Levin in at 10th and Walnut

This morning, Dan Gross’ gossip on the bitchiness between two famous Philly families, the Spains and the Borishes, culminated in the fact that the 10th-and-Walnut Street address that holds Marathon Grill now, as part of a settlement, belongs to the Spains. And Bernie Spain's wish was to let Barry Gutin and Larry Cohen of Cuba Libre (10 S. Second St.) and their company, Guest Counts, run the new restaurant. "We knew what was going on and have been involved in the new concept in recent months," says Gutin, who refused to get into the minutiae of what went down between the Borish and Spain camps. “It's not our fray to be in the middle of."

What is their fray is the concept, food and chef. And it should be no surprise to those who know Cohen, Gutin and their various food enterprises such as Brûlée Catering, that Matt Levin would be their choice as 10th and Walnut's chef, as noted earlier by Philly Chit Chat. "Matt's been with us for some time," says Gutin, confirming the role Levin, formerly of Lacroix and Adsum, holds in the new project. "We had him in mind for this project immediately, and no one else."

Since this is happening relatively quickly, Gutin says the restaurant's name and food direction is as yet undetermined. "Creative food is what Matt is known for," says Gutin. "We think what he'll plan out will be perfect for the Jefferson Hospital area." (Neither Cohen or Gutin have nailed down any designers yet, though the pair is in discussions). With plans to open "early next year," everyone is moving quickly to resolution. We’ll check back in within two weeks.
