DELICIOUS OR SUSPICIOUS: Subway barbecue pulled pork

Have you guys heard of Subway's new barbecue pulled pork sub? I sure hope you have.

I’m a pulled pork enthusiast — I'll eat it from anywhere at any time. Those old dudes eating cheesesteaks at Pat's at 9 a.m.? That's me with pulled pork sandwiches. So naturally I was excited to try Subway's; my thought process was, "Even if this isn't awesome, it can't be that bad."

I picked up a 6-inch on plain Italian bread with provolone. I usually dislike cheese on pulled pork, but it's Subway so you get cheese on everything. After toasting up the roll, the prep guy scooped about a cup of meat onto the bun and squeezed some sauce on top. Got it home, opened it up, and observed: The bread was sorta smushed, but there was no way I was letting that throw me. I'm on your side, Subway. Don't let me down.

It didn't look like traditional pulled pork, but I suppose that's because it wasn't — it's a vague shredded pork product (no idea if it's shoulder, or butt, or what). Although it was generally unattractive, the smell was all right. I was perfectly happy to take a big bite. I even looked forward to it.

It actually tasted OK! Nothing at all like the pulled pork you'd get at Bull's at Citizens Bank Park or Sticky Lips in Rochester, N.Y., but it was fine. The pork wasn’t dry and the sauce tasted like regular, acceptable ol' Kraft brand. The cheese did add a little extra flavor, while the bread took nothing away. It surpassed all my (low) expectations. It was fine.

Conclusion: If you like pulled pork and have absolutely no access to the real thing, this will do. It definitely has satisfying porky characteristics, and actually it's easier to eat than real pulled pork since everything tends to stay on the bread. So congrats, Subway. This time, you are DELICIOUS.

Ha! I don't think I've ever seen anyone get so passive aggressive over a sandwich write up. I'm pretty sure the intent is pure fun, not to lay claim to be the 1st person to blog about food from Subway.
