DRINK THIS IMMEDIATELY: Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Ale

Winter is gone, and so are most of the strong dark beers that make the season warmer. There's still time, however, for a last hurrah before succumbing to the light and crisp beers of spring. Why not sing that liquid swan song with Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Ale?

Winter is gone, and so are most of the strong dark beers that make the season warmer. There's still time, however, for a last hurrah before succumbing to the light and crisp beers of spring. Why not sing that liquid swan song with Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Ale?

Based in small-town Marshall, Michigan, Dark Horse Brewing Co. has been making beer since 1997. The brewery's portfolio runs the gamut — Philly often gets access to their West Coast-inspired Crooked Tree IPA, the not-too-sweet Raspberry Ale and the darker-than-average Boffo Brown. But right now we're focused on this "special" ale. If the never-blinking eye of Sauron cried, his tears would be this stuff. The 7.5 percent ABV ale pours completely opaque black, its strong, malty body making it dribble out of the tap like mud through a garden hose. It has a smoky, nearly burnt flavor that dominates the front end before the beer settles into a boozy, semisweet, coffee-and-bitter chocolate finish.

Philly Tap Finder tell us the only place in town with Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Ale currently on tap is Rembrandt's (741 N. 23rd St.), but it may be hiding in a few other bars. The Sidecar (2201 Christian St.), to name one, has a keg it will be tapped in the next few days. Drink this immediately!
