Elixr's new digs plus a charitable grand opening

POSTED: Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 12:40 PM

Elixr Coffee (207 S. 15th St.) has got a big move coming up and they’re celebrating the grand opening of their new, larger space with an event to benefit arts education in Philly.

Back to School Brews, scheduled for Wednesday, August 29th at Elixr’s new digs (1512 Walnut St), will give customers their first look at the new shop while encouraging them to donate to the construction of an art classroom for a charter school in southwest Philly.

Deva Watson, the art teacher (and Pub and Kitchen server) behind the donation drive, has been hard at work raising cash to build an art classroom at Southwest Leadership Academy after the school lost federal funding. Greensaw Design and Build (who are also behind Elixr’s new space) are on board with some pro bono help in creating the classroom.

All proceeds from the grand opening event will benefit Watson’s cause, from food and beverage sales to the planned silent auction. Elixr’s owners asked local artists to donate works to auction off, and there will be plenty of other awesome prizes up for grabs, too: Bid on a concert by a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra in your very own home, a mosaic tile painted with your name (by one of the very kids whose education you’re supporting) and installed at the school, or three-course tasting menus at Sbraga (440 S. Broad St) and Chris Kearse’s new spot, Will (1911 E. Passyunk Ave).

But you don’t have to wait until next Wednesday to help out. Stop by Elixr’s current location, where you can pick up a coffee card for $15 that will entitle you to 10 days of free coffee at the new shop. Cardholders can help themselves to all of the 12- or 16-oz. coffees they can drink from September 1st through the 10th (if you find yourself fancying an espresso drink instead, your $1 upcharge will also benefit the school).
