Nothing pairs with art and culture quite like ice cream and dried beef.

First Friday's here, and it brought snacks

POSTED: Friday, November 2, 2012, 1:55 PM

Despite how it may occasionally feel, First Friday doesn't have to be all ascetic art appreciation and resigned nibbling on chunks of generic cheese. Here are a few events tonight that will feed your brain's high-flown culture center and your stomach.

If you've been to Little Baby's (2311 Frankford Ave.) or even just heard about it, you've probably heard tell of the shop's musical shower. Tonight at 5 p.m., they're unveiling Music for Ice Cream, which brings the shower to life as a fully interactive art installation, playing music penned by local musician Jon Guez. In turns nostalgic and dystopian on its own, the soundtrack's quality is ultimately up to you, as you get the chance to control the experience by manipulating the shower controls.

Of course, there are more works of art to unveil tonight; namely, new fall flavors Sweet Potato Burnt Marshmallow (based on November's iconic casserole) and Apple Snap (a mulled cider-inspired apple ice cream that gets its spice from AITA's gingery Snap). And while they've already officially made their debut, you may also want to save some room for some other awesome flavors like Pumpkin Curry or a vegan version of their Goldenberg's Peanut Chew Vanilla Molasses.

Meanwhile, booze by Art in the Age is also playing a key part in tonight's First Friday event at AITA (116 N. 3rd St.). From 6 to 8 p.m., the shop's sampling cocktails made with their signature spirits, paired with every Philly gentleman's favorite beef snack, Side Project Jerky. The rugged snack with a refined aesthetic makes perfect sense alongside the shop's non-food feature of the night, Norman Porter denim. But if you're feeling snackish, you might want to try to make it closer to the start of the evening—the jerky's got a serious fanbase, and supplies might not make it all the way through to 8 p.m.
