H Mart food court explorations

Pho, sushi and bibimbab all in the same place? The More Food Court in H-Mart (7320 Old York Rd.) in Philly's Koreatown is your one-stop-shop. Not all food court stalls are made equal however, but there are good (and cheap) eats to be had. Meal ticket checked out two of the H-Mart food court options.

There are five options in the second floor of the H Mart: Ming, Joa and 장터 (soup spot), all Korean, Fuze for Japanese and Pho My Tam for Vietnamese. A sixth sign advertises “ToreOre: Chicken and Joy,” but as intriguing as that sounds, that particular shop seems to have shuttered.

Between the two that we tried, the clear winner here for a hot summer day was Joa. Jjol myun, chewy noodles with spicy, lightly sweet sauce were served chilled, topped with a slow burning chile sauce. The steamed dumplings resembled Chinese pork buns, but the filling had a distinctly Korean flavor profile.

Sorry Ming, your mapo tofu was tasteless and the chopped vegetables had obviously come from the freezer.

All orders come with a light scallion soup and a ramekin of banchan (think pickled radishes or kimchi), which completed each dish.

Whichever place you go for, the portions are huge and you could easily feed 4 people for $20. Now you know what awaits above H-Mart, and it makes for the perfect pit stop for pre or post H-Mart shopping.
