HAPPY HOUR HOPPER: MilkBoy Philly

WHERE YOU AT? MilkBoy (1100 Chestnut St.) has been open for about six months now, the newest member of a family that includes older siblings in Ardmore and Bryn Mawr. Philly's the baby, but it's got a serious leg up on its Main Line counterparts: a liquor license. They had a tempting draft list when I showed up with some girlfriends for happy hour around 4:30 one evening last week. We sat at the bar (specials apply to booth sitters, too), and I was glad I did — our bartender was extra-generous, letting my friends and I try a sample a few drafts before committing. I ended up with the smoky Williamsburg Alewerks Washington's Porter; friends grabbed a Mission Shipwrecked IPA and an "Auntie Maxie" cocktail, a combination of Absolut wild tea, Barenjager and lemon sweetly served in a mason jar.

WHAT'S THE SCENE? Of all the bars this HHH has haunted thus far, I appreciated MilkBoy's atmosphere the most — love the ambiance of the downstairs bar/restaurant (upstairs is their music venue). Exposed brick and distressed walls give the place an edge cut by accompanying '50s-inspired touches, and lord knows this area needs a little edge. Aside from bustling 13th Street, Center City East has long struggled to obtain/maintain a "scene" that rivals Center City West's. As it was, every last member of the crowd at MilkBoy appeared to be under 40, hip and beautiful in an unkempt sort of way.

WHAT'S THE DEAL? Truth be told, the HH dealage here is not that noticeable — they knock a buck off well drinks, drafts, wine and cocktails on weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m., in addition to offering various all-day specials ($4 Jack shots, $5 Jameson shots, $8 buckets of Bud ponies, etc.). One dollar off an $8 cocktail doesn’t make much fiscal difference to me, and the same goes for a $4 pint instead of a $5 one. Still, I'll definitely go back to happy hour here, especially when out-of-towners come visit and want to feel like they're in the thick of Philly. MilkBoy manages to simultaneously capture that city pulse and keep its patrons relaxed and well-watered. Check it out and see if you agree.

Cheers, y'all.
