Hawthornes owners talk Tritone plans

Met with Chris and Heather Fetfatzes of Hawthornes Café (738 S. 11th St.) late last week to get the early word on their slated-for-spring takeover of Tritone (1508 South St.). The South Street bar and venue will host its very last show on Feb. 24; on March 1, the Fetfatzes will officially get the keys to the long-standing space to begin work on what they're calling The Cambridge.

Chris, whose family runs Bella Vista Beer Distributor across the street from he and his wife's two-year-old beer emporium/restaurant, characterizes the concept cleanly. "It's not a beer bar, not a wine bar — just a really good, local neighborhood bar," he says of the thought process behind The Cambridge. "We feel there are a lack of places like this in the city." He'd like it to be a place where "pretense is checked at the door." No hard numbers on drafts yet, but the couple will maximize the available keg space to focus on both American and Euro craft selections, complemented by a wine program built around small-batch producers. Hawthornes chef Mathew Plank is in charge of the food, and will take an affordable "hodgepodge" approach to the menu.

The Fetfatzes admit that the process of securing Tritone from longtime owner Dave Rogers was "painful." Rogers, who had been looking to sell for some time, had many other suitors approaching him. And then there are the heaps of complaints/concerns the Fetfatzes have fielded from those who see the closure of Tritone as a blow to the Philly rock scene. (Remember the Khyber outcry?) While the space will be 100 percent overhauled — a completely new facade, a large rear patio area (yes, the Tritone has a back yard) — Chris says they're tinkering with the idea of running performances in some capacity. "We're not really hippies but we're big into vibes," he says. "We're talking about keeping some live music, and maybe doing DJ nights. But there's nothing set in stone."
