Heat Relief: Ice cream happenings about town

It's brutal out there. As in for real ice cream weather. To help alleviate some of the late afternoon heat induced ennui, here's a round up of some ice cream happenings around town.

We're deep into berry season and Franklin Fountain (116 N. Market St.) is staying sustainable and local with their flavor of the month Berry Bonanza, a blueberry ice cream featuring fresh and organic NJ blueberries. To fight this summer's incessant heat waves, they have also created a new menu item called the Franklin Freeze, a drink that's way more satisfying than water but not as heavy as a milkshake. You choose 1 sorbet, 1 ice cream and 1 thirstade, which makes for a thinner, more thirst-quenching, blended treat. The Berley Brothers suggest lemon sorbet, blueberry ice cream and lemonade.

Bassett's, recently named one of the best places in the U.S. for ice cream has several feature flavors at the moment which appear to me to have varying degrees of appeal. A week ago, a friend and I shared their Guatemalan Ripple, coffee ice cream with a fudge swirl, and finished every last drop at the bottom of the styrofoam cup. Going with the berry theme, they are now serving a Pomegranate and Blueberry flavor with a blueberry and pomegranate swirl and chocolate chips. For the more adventurous and all PBJ lovers, they are now serving PB and J Get the Scoop which consists of, you guessed it, peanut butter and jelly. Are you intrigued? Stop by their stall at the Reading Terminal Market for a taste.

The Capogiro at 119 S. 13th St. is serving their Lavender gelato today only. This rare flavor only makes an appearance 3 or 4 times a year, so check it out if you enjoy eating flowers. If not, Thai Coconut Milk, while not exactly an authentic Italian flavor, is my standard go to and is being served at all Capogiro locations with the exception of the Capoyunk Scoop Shop at 1625 E. Passyunk Ave. You can always go to their website to check out the flavors of the day too.

Scoop de Ville (1734 Chestnut St) is now serving ice cream for breakfast. Or is it breakfast for ice cream? Their new Maple Bacon Breakfast ice cream is made with maple-walnut or vanilla ice cream with maple syrup, real bacon bits and golden grahams. If that is too crazy for you, they also just added Red Velvet to their menu, along with the warning it is highly addicting. If that isn't crazy enough for you, the options are endless with their create your own flavor option, along with suggested recipes. It only takes a couple minutes, so head on over.
