It's truffle season at La Castagne

POSTED: Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 1:32 PM

It seems as if the Rittenhouse area is awash in gorgeous earthy truffles. Last Monday, Il Pittore’s Chris Painter made them the focus of his fanciful wine dinner on Sansom Street. This week, the too-often overlooked Le Castagne (1920 Chestnut St.) has four days worth of all-truffle Italian meals (beginning this evening and running until November 10th) and wine pairings with two different prix fixe menus and a less pricey lunch menu to boot.

"I've wanted to do a truffle menu for quite some time considering where they come from and the type of food we serve here," says Anthony Masapollo, La Castagne’s co-owner/manager of Le Castagne "Truffles are more than a mere ingredient. They elevate a meal to unspeakable heights. That’s why we’re offering a range of options to suit everyone's taste and wallets."

The grandly draped La Castagne will host a $125 per person option featuring five courses, a $350 per person meal with add-on shavings per dish and wine. Truffle shavings can be added to any a la carte menu dish at $35 for black truffles and $50 for white truffles per ounce. For those seeking opulent setting for a lunch time bite, there’s a three course option for $75 per person.

"Giving a talented Chef a truffle for inspiration is simple bliss as they are so rare and perishable, yet filled with umami-type flavor," said Michael DeLone, La Castagne’s executive chef. "One wants to respect it and make something ordinary extraordinary. Both the white and black varieties do just that."

The Deluxe Truffle Package, $125 per person includes:

    Uovo Alla Milanese

Milanese style egg, truffle bread crumb, spinach, roasted cherry tomatoes, truffle vinaigrette, Humboldt Fog goat cheese

    Tagliatelli con Tartufi Bianchie Neri

a side by side black versus white tasting

    Quaglia arrostita ripiena

Roasted quail stuffed with housemade sausage, potato, and guanciale, finished with black truffle demi glace

    Torta lavica al cioccolato

Chocolate lava cake with truffle ricotta gelato, honey
